The artist quickly made an impression on our small community gallery. Her previous batch of pictures sold before I even uploaded them to the online window 🙂 These wonderfully embroidered, framed works are the new arrivals. I am moved by this picture; ethereal is not quite the right word, but it comes close. I love works that reach beyond themselves and beyond their maker. Very occasionally, I say of my own pictures that they are more beautiful than I am or could be. This picture gives me the feeling I get from the best of my own work: that it extends beyond its maker, becoming something larger than an ordinary human thing. When she arrived at the gallery, she was still asking that morning whether I really meant it when I said her work was good. Then she opened her folder and told me this was her first linocut. To make a linocut, the artist carves the reversed negative of an image into a firm sheet, originally linoleum, using very sharp tools. Viktória’s first print already shows a well-grounded artistic approach. The crow’s fine lines reveal confident skill and a careful, prepared artist. I love how these prints confront both our prejudices about crows and what is now widely known about their remarkable intelligence. I also think it is a valid reading that today’s equivalent of the dove and olive branch might be a crow and a discarded drinking straw.
