What do we do with sorrow? What support does culture offer? Are we allowed to be sad? This is an unusual piece in the body of work. It fits neither the Analóg Angelika nor the Anyádrajzol label comfortably. It nevertheless became part of Anyádrajzol, perhaps mainly because of its drawing-based character, although its mood might place it closer to Analóg. This is particularly so because it directly preceded Phosphorus — A Soldier Taking His Own Life During White Phosphorus Bombing. Yet its affirmation of life and its way of confronting difficult circumstances — through humour elsewhere, through a more objective perspective here — ultimately connect it with Anyádrajzol.

Analóg Angelika: Unintended Madonna – Madonna jelenés

Analóg works through introspective mindfulness. Making a picture often requires a raw and ruthless immersion in subconscious feelings and sensations. She writes about her experiences alongside the paintings, conceiving image and text as a unit and creating a personal connection between artist and viewer. Madonna Apparition began as a study of space, structure and repetition. By her own account, she worked on the panel rotated through ninety degrees. While running a community and commercial gallery focused mainly on discovering and supporting artists, she received intensive art-history teaching as part of a painting-appraisal course. The countless images of the Madonna in the European tradition made a strong impression on her. She continued painting while studying medieval art, and this work dates from that period. She put it aside to dry. The following day, a visitor exclaimed, “What a beautiful Virgin Mary!” And there she was: turning the painting revealed the Virgin Mary. Oil on fibreboard, 2023, 40 × 30 cm.

For more than twelve years, Analóg Angelika has been writing down the great late-night revelations of pubs and festivals, occasionally slipping her own experiences and observations in among the nonsense. Talking about myself in the third person feels ambivalent, but I gave it a try 😀 After some hesitation, I decided to make my text-based pictures available through Start Galéria Budapest, keeping my painting and my more playful work separate. There is good news for lovers of the genre: works by other artists will soon be joining the ALWAYS THE NONSENSE category too 🙂
